(NEXSTAR)– If there are two points America loves to do, it’s eat hot pets and suggest about insignificant points. Fortunate for us, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council are fueling both of our cherished interests on National Hot Pet Dog Day.
The National Hot Canine and Sausage Council (NHDSC) has decided to commemorate 2021’s National Hotdog Day by dredging up a conflict that has surged in between opposing intrigues of foodies since the dawn of the internet: Is the hot canine a sandwich?
No, it’s not, according to the National Hotdog and Sausage Council.
The NHDSC initially chose in 2015 that the modest hotdog inhabits “a classification unto its very own,” regardless of previously siding with the USDA’s unclear meaning of a that put hotdogs in the sandwich classification.
“When it first arrived on American shores from Europe in the late 1800s, it was commonly described as a ‘Coney Island Sandwich’ or ‘Frankfurter sandwich,'” the NHDSC in 2015. “Yet similar to an ‘ice lotion sundae’ is simply described as a sundae, terms adjustments.”
Currently, six years later, the NHDSC is once again reiterating its position on hot dogs– as well as the majority of Americans apparently are in contract.
On Tuesday, just someday before National Hot Pet Day, the NHDSC disclosed the results of a self-commissioned study (in partnership with the Cattleman’s Beef Board and its Beef Checkoff campaign) that located that 57% of respondents agreed with the NHDSC that hotdogs are not sandwiches.
“It’s such an alleviation that Americans are on the same page on these crucial hot pet beliefs,” said NHDSC President Eric Mittenthal in a recent press release. “As we’ve claimed time and also time (and also time) again … a hot pet dog is NOT a sandwich. It remains in a category of its own that surpasses the sandwich category.”
It goes without claiming that the NHDSC, which was developed by the North American Meat Institute profession organization in 1994, plainly has a pet dog in this fight. Yet that’s not to claim they’re the just major mouthpiece for the meat market. In 2018, that hot canines are indeed sandwiches, apparently for nothing else reason than to fire up dispute on Twitter.
